About Physical Therapy at UB

A physical therapist is a trained health care professional whose job is to help patients recovering from injury, illness, or disease. They work in collaboration with other members of the health care team to improve each patient's ability to move and function to the maximum extent possible. The program at UB combines 3 years of training in exercise science, during which students are thoroughly schooled in all aspects of movement and exercise in healthy individuals, with 3 years of professional, clinical, physical therapy education. Upon completion of the program the student receives the Doctor of Physical Therapy degree, the highest degree awarded in the profession. The student is then eligible to sit for the licensure examination, which will enable them to practice in any state. The program at UB emphasizes rigorous basic science courses combined with extensive hands-on training. Students spend 52 weeks working side-by-side with experienced physical therapists in a variety of clinical settings, such as hospitals, clinics, and schools.
